Bold & Beautiful: Recipes for Brewing Peep'l Coffee at Home

South Indian Robusta coffee is bold, earthy, and deeply rooted in centuries of tradition. Grown in the lush, shade-dappled estates of Kerala and Karnataka, these beans pack a rich flavor with low acidity and twice the caffeine of Arabica. At Peep'l, we celebrate this unique character through a variety of brewing styles that showcase the full spectrum of robusta’s potential—from the rustic to the refined.

Here are some tried-and-true recipes for brewing Peep'l coffee at home, using different methods—from traditional South Indian filter coffee to modern techniques like the French press and Moka pot.

1. South Indian Filter Coffee (Kaapi)

Flavor: Bold, sweet, creamy
What you’ll need:

  • Peep'l Coffee (fine grind)

  • South Indian coffee filter

  • Hot water

  • Fresh whole milk

  • Jaggery or sugar

Recipe:

  1. Add 2 tablespoons of ground coffee to the top compartment of the filter.

  2. Gently press with the umbrella plunger.

  3. Pour hot water over the grounds and let it slowly drip into the lower chamber.

  4. In a pan, heat milk and sweeten it to taste.

  5. Once the decoction is ready (takes 10–15 mins), mix 1 part decoction with 2 parts milk.

  6. Pour from one cup to another a few times to create a frothy layer.

Perfect for slow mornings and comfort cravings.

2. French Press

Flavor: Earthy, rich, full-bodied
What you’ll need:

  • Coarsely ground Peep'l Coffee beans

  • French press

  • Hot water (just off the boil)

Recipe:

  1. Add 1 tablespoon of coffee for every 4 oz of water.

  2. Pour hot water over the grounds and stir gently.

  3. Place the lid and let it steep for 4–5 minutes.

  4. Press down slowly and evenly.

  5. Pour and enjoy black or with a dash of cream.

🕯️ Pairs beautifully with dark chocolate or a rainy afternoon.

3. Moka Pot (Stovetop Espresso)

Flavor: Strong, intense, slightly smoky
What you’ll need:

  • Medium-fine ground Peep'l Coffee beans

  • Moka pot

  • Filtered water

Recipe:

  1. Fill the bottom chamber with water (below the valve).

  2. Add coffee to the filter basket—pack it lightly.

  3. Assemble the pot and heat on medium flame.

  4. Once you hear a hissing sound, remove from heat.

  5. Enjoy straight or mix with steamed milk for a strong latte.

🔥 Great for espresso lovers and caffeine chasers.

4. Cold Brew with Robusta

Flavor: Smooth, strong, chocolaty
What you’ll need:

  • Coarsely ground Peep'l Coffee beans

  • Cold/room temp filtered water

  • Mason jar or cold brew maker

  • Time

Recipe:

  1. Mix 1 cup ground coffee with 4 cups water.

  2. Let it steep for 16–20 hours in the fridge.

  3. Strain through a fine mesh or cheesecloth.

  4. Serve over ice with milk or simple syrup.

❄️ A summer essential with a caffeine kick.

A Note on Flavor:

South Indian Robusta Coffee can carry notes of dark cocoa, pepper, tobacco, and woodsmoke. It pairs especially well with creamy textures like milk or creamer and sometimes something sweet on the side.
